Martin Stone Quarries has always taken a proactive approach when dealing with environmental issues and concerns. In the past, this approach prompted the company to devote personnel, products, and financial resources to develop a large wildlife refuge encompassing more than five acres of land. With the assistance of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Martin Stone Quarries created four large earthen pools with interconnecting waterways. Indigenous vegetation was then planted to complement the pools and attract new wildlife to the area. The immense project was completed at the sole expense of Martin Stone Quarries.
This proactive approach to environmental issues is evident in the daily operation of Martin Stone Quarries. Comprehensive plans are in place to ensure that the quality of the air and water resources around the quarry sites remain unharmed.
Dust suppression systems have been installed on processing plants, greatly reducing the emissions from the plants. A commercial water truck is operated whenever necessary to reduce dust from the quarry haul roads, and many of our vibratory screens are located in enclosed buildings to reduce noise and emissions. A full-time sweeper operator makes routine passes to ensure that any stone and debris is quickly cleaned up.
Noise pollution is diminished by placing primary crushers in pits whenever practical. This reduces the noise of the crusher and also of the heavy equipment hauling to it. Aesthetically pleasing berms and trees have also been installed to help reduce the noise.
Water quality is strictly monitored through the use of strategically placed swales and sediment ponds. Waste water created by the heavy equipment washing facility is treated via a state of the art water recycling system. This closed circuit system removes the oil, grease, dirt, and other contaminants from the water, allowing the water to be reused multiple times.
Most importantly, all employees are continually trained on environmental and safety issues and are encouraged to report any deficiency in the environmental protection plans directly to management. Martin Stone Quarries is committed to maintaining a healthy environment and will continue to devote various resources to this cause.
